While the Greeks started a wisdom movement, roughly characterized in terms of the pursuit of happiness (eudaimonia) via intellectual and moral virtue, the movement Jesus and his followers inaugurated appears to be substantially different.8 From the first public words of his ministry (Matt 4:17) to his last (Acts 1:8), Jesus was concerned with the progress of the gospel—the good news that the kingdom of God was at hand. The coming of Jesus alerts us that something
